What is Adult Day Care?

Caring for a loved one can take its toll on a family caregiver. A good source of respite, adult day care programs provide care and companionship for older adults who need assistance or supervision during daytime hours. They offer planned social and health services and activities for older adults in a non-institutional setting. Programs are designed to be therapeutic and to promote overall wellbeing. Day programs may be utilized occasionally, or as frequently as daily. Most programs are open M-F during working hours, but some may offer evening and weekend hours. Adult day care programs can be found in stand-alone centers or as a part of the service offerings of assisted living communities and other non-profit and for profit organizations.

Adult Day Care services typically include:

  • A secure, supervised environment
  • Transportation
  • Meals
  • Planned recreation and social activities
  • Health services (can vary)
